Accused collar bomber drops extradition fight with US in 'biggest ever' case
A convicted terrorist charged with murdering three police officers in the US over a 2010 bombing attempt has dropped his appeal against extradition to Turkey, claiming the US is still threatening to extradite him.
Ali Hamed Elgindy, 27, of Detroit, was arrested in July 2010 in connection with a bombing of a gas refinery in Detroit. Police were looking for two former members of the Michigan State Militia, who have since been jailed for their roles in the failed attack.
Prosecutors had wanted Elgindy, who was serving a sentence of life in prison for the 2010 bombing, to travel to Turkey and face the same charges as another man with alleged ties to the group, Abdullah Kümet Özçek.
On Tuesday, prosecutors at a separate court hearing in Detroit filed a request to have the extradition ruling thrown out, saying the US has failed to present credible evidence that it has any "legitimate or probable" claim over Elgindy.
Prosecutors said they expected the request to be denied.
Turkish officials have repeatedly refused to extradite alleged terrorist defendants to Turkey for trial and for years have refused to discuss them. But since June last year, Elgindy's lawyers have argued in Washington that the Turkish government has a right to request extradition, which would give them the freedom to pursue all legal options, without the worry of Turkey simply refusing to cooperate.
US prosecutors have not denied the request but say it is too late for them to initiate an extradition request against Elgindy now.

But the White House has consistently rejected that request, saying Elgindy faces the death penalty if brought to the US to face any charges.
A senior US official involved in the Elgindy case earlier this year said there are "a lot of cases that have never gotten the scrutiny and scrutiny they need" for their extradition, adding that Elgindy's case was a key one.
The official said the government is still considering the extradition request because it is important that the Turkish authorities keep all necessary evidence from the trial and its aftermath.
"All that we have in this situation is about three years worth of investigative work that has resulted in evidence that was the subject of a serious investigation in the United States and the evidence that was presented to the court of the fact that the defendant was considered a potential terrorist threat by the FBI in 2014," the official told Reuters.
